just thinking

since humans seem to be violent in nature, would it be safe to say that certain act such as torturing are here to stay. it seems to me that violence is inbreed in us, and even though we have the right to reason maybe their is a gene that codes for violence and if this is the case then it might be safe to say that acts such as torture and war are here to stay.

I think we each have the inborn capacity/disposition to be violent or peaceful, and social circumstances primarily select for one or the other.

Especially our genetic dispositions encourage responses to certain things. It is our tendency to fear, I think, that drives us to violence, rather than an internal mechanism disposed to violence itself. If humans learned to work together and seek mutual understanding, it may seem less like we're naturally violent and more like we were just looking for peace of mind and security of self by acting violent in the past.

I agree with Specific Relativity in that we are fearful and thus act violently. We are animals just like cats, dogs and fish and therefore we tend to have animal urges to act a certain way either because of violence around us (in our environment) or fear of something unknown. However, I think we can overcome this animal instinct because we have the ability to think and with some thought our morals will disallow violence.

I completely agree. Genetic dispositions, societal upbringings and instinctive responses can be explanation, but not always (or, perhaps, even often) good excuses.
